Just a glitch?
Sharks slipping lately

After a six-game win streak that ended with two
road wins in Minnesota and Winnipeg in two nights, the Sharks have come home to
lose twice, to Florida and Nashville. Of course, they can't win them all.
There's going to be some rough patches along the way. The losses, though,
spoiled the chance for the Sharks to re-take first place in the conference,
where they had been playing leapfrog with the Calgary Flames on an almost daily
basis.
It will be nice if the Sharks can get back on the winning track
and soon. Upcoming games against Vegas don't give me a warm feeling, though,
since the Sharks have often struggled against the league's newest expansion
team, which eliminated the Sharks from the playoffs last year.
On the
ice, we're seeing some great play from players like Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier,
but it hasn't been enough to get wins for the team on this most-recent home
stand, with the Sharks snagging zero out of a possible four points in the
standings.
On Saturday, the Sharks worked like mad to get goals from
Meier and Joe Thornton, only to give up a goal 24 seconds after the Meier goal
and then give up Nashville's winning goal with goalie Martin Jones caught out
of position.
The playoffs will be here before we know it. The
Sharks, as usual, will most likely make the tournament. Where they go from
there remains to be seen. Should the team get to the Stanley Cup Final against
Tampa Bay, there's not a lot of reason to be confident. Tampa Bay, with 114
points as of Sunday, has far and away the best record in the league. The Sharks
stymied them in San Jose on January 5, winning 5-2.
Can they do that
four times in seven games, including at least once on the road? It will be an
uphill climb for the Sharks. We all want 39-year-old Thornton to finally get
his Cup win, but he might fall short yet again.
In the meantime, the
Sharks have to get back on track and start winning again. At this phase of the
season, even a two-game losing streak can be costly in the standings. Time to
start another big winning streak.
