Home cooking energizes
Sharks San Jose scores 4 goals in shutout out of New
Jersey
The Sharks returned to the friendly confines of SAP
Center on Monday night, following their long 6-game road trip, and made the
most of their home-ice advantage. San Jose scored early, and rolled to a
decisive 4-0 win over the visiting New Jersey Devils, paced by Martin Jones' 26
saves and 15th career shutout. The victory snaps the Sharks 3-game losing
streak.
Scoring hasn't been easy for the Sharks the past two weeks,
but they bagged a pair of goals early, which allowed them to open things up
both offensively and defensively. San opened the scoring the hard way early in
the contest after Matt Nieto was whistled for interference just 1:44 after the
opening faceoff.
With the Sharks on the penalty kill, an errant puck
kicked out of the Sharks zone, just as Chris Tierney and Patrick Marleau were
back skating toward the blueline. Tierney carried the puck up the left wing
with Marleau on his right flank. The Sharks forward skated in on New Jersey
goaltender Keith Kincaid, then elected to snap a wrist shot from 12 feet out,
rather than try to force a pass to his right. The shot clipped Kincaid's left
shoulder on its way to the upper right corner where it caught the inside of the
netting for his 1st goal of the season.
San Jose pushed their lead to
a pair of goals 4:44 later, when Patrick Marleau punched home his 5th of the
season from the doorstep. The Sharks forward was parked at the top of the
crease when a Joe Pavelski shot hit Kincaid in the chest and bounced back
toward Marleau. The wily veteran hacked at the puck, bouncing a shot off
Kincaid, then took a second hack at is, chipping it past the Devils goaltender.
Former Anaheim Ducks forward Ben Lovejoy was whistled for interference
midway through the 2nd period, setting up the Sharks 3rd goal of the night.
Logan Couture scored his 5th of the season on the ensuing power play after
collecting a fortuitous bounce after Joe Thornton tried making a feed from the
right circle. Thornton's pass hit Andy Greene in the skate, then bounced to the
left side where Couture was lurking. All that remained was Couture firing the
shot into a wide open net.
Joe Thornton was credited with the primary
assist on Couture's goal, which was his 900th point as a Shark.
Tierney took a shot off the visor 3 minutes into the
3rd period, which dropped him before bee-lining it to the locker room for
medical attention.
Brent Burns capped the night's scoring with a goal
7:38 into the final period courtesy of Kyle Quincey who mishandled the puck and
put it into his own net. Burns slid a shot across the crease, with Quincey
facing the net on the right post. The Devils defenseman tried to slide the puck
forward in order to position it on his backhand for a clear, but his right
skate gave out, and he missed the latter half of his maneuver, letting it slide
past Kincaid for Burns' 7th goal of the season.
