Lowly Oiler spoil Sharks playoff party
4 goal 2nd period sinks San Jose
3/24/16 - By Mike Lee -

There are losses, and then there are those head scratching performances that make you wonder why you bothered to get up that morning. Thursday night was one of the latter, as the Sharks turned in an abomination of a performance en route to a 6-3 loss to the lowly Edmonton Oilers. In their second chance to clinch a playoff spot, the Sharks once again gagged up another loss albeit to a cellar dweller. The upstart Oilers exploded for 4 goals in the 2nd period to hand San Jose their 20th loss on home ice this season.

The Sharks turned in 20 minutes of effort, then packed it in for the night, blowing a 2-0 1st period lead. What started as a mission, turned into a flailing example of what an ill-prepared team San Jose was when they stepped on the ice.

How many ways can you describe a complete meltdown?

San Jose jumped out to their early lead with goals from Tommy Wingels and Joe Pavelski in the opening period. Wingels deflected a Roman Polak shot as he cut across the slot from left to right.

The goal came with Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse sitting in the penalty box after fighting Micheal Haley. Nurse broke Polak's nose the last time the two teams met after he sucker punched the Sharks defenseman in retaliation for a hit that Polak never made on Nurse's teammate.

Pavelski sent a one-time chance from outside the right post past Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot on the power play at 11:41 after Zack Kassian was sent off for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Joe Thornton setup the goal with a pass from behind the Oilers net.

San Jose punched out and called it a day after the 1st intermission.

Edmonton scored the next three goals. Lauri Korpikoski knocked a shoulder high Ada Clendening shot out of the air with his stick blade, bouncing the puck past Sharks goaltender James Reimer.

Patrick Marleau coughed up the puck in his own zone 7 minutes later, allowing Taylor Hall to scoop up the turnover and snapping a shot past Reimer from 30 feet out. Defenseman Justin Braun may have screened his own goaltender on the play as he tried to step in front of Hall's shot.

Clendening threw a puck on net from the right point less than a minute later, leveraging a Paul Martin screen to beat Reimer and make it a 3-2 Oiles lead.

Marleau stabbed at a loose puck from the Oilers doorstep at 12:26 to score on another Sharks power play, tying the game at 3-3.

That tie would be short lived as Patrick Maroon converted for Edmonton with 1:56 left in the period. Reimer was left out to dry after Connor McDavid gained the Sharks zone and hit Maroon with a pass in front for the easy deposit.

Jordan Eberle converted his 24th goal of the season at 12:54 of the 3rd period to push the Oilers lead to two goals, which was more than enough scoring to lead Edmonton. It was certainly enough to break the Sharks spirit.

Hall added an empty-net goal late to cap the game's scoring.
