Sharks dispatch Canucks
again Another strong 3rd period paces SJ
The Sharks did what they needed to do Thursday
night in Vancouver as they kicked off the road end of a home-and-home series
with the Canucks. Coming off their 4-1 win in British Columbia last Sunday, the
Sharks overpowered Vancouver with another strong 3rd period, scoring a pair of
goals to wipe out a 2-1 Canucks lead.
San Jose struggled through a
rough opening period that saw Vancouver jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Sharks came
out of the gate slow and the Canucks pounced. Had it not been for their 3rd
period heroics, the Sharks may have been forced to limp home.
Jake
Virtanen staked the Canucks to a 1-0 lead by bouncing a shot off Sharks captain
Joe Pavelski 7:14 into the game. Virtanen carried the puck up the left side of
the rink before uncorking a wrist shot from the left dot. Martin Jones stopped
the shot, but Virtanen scooped up the rebound and raced around the back of the
net. The winger tried throwing the puck to the front of the net, but Pavelski
was cutting across the top of the crease in pursuit of Virtanen when the puck
hit him in the shin pad and redirected into the Sharks net.
Sven
Baertschi pushed the Canucks lead to two goals with 1:29 left in the period.
Dan Hamhuis fired a shot from the blueline, but Baertschi disrupted the
trajectory by getting a stick blade on the puck in the high slot. The puck
shifted right, sliding between Jones pads for Baertschi's 13th goal of the
season.
Tomas Hertl cut the Canucks lead in half midway through the
2nd period, doing his best Baertschi imitation by deflecting a Brent Burns shot
past Ryan Miller. Hertl fought off Ben Hutton in front of the Canucks net to
get his stick on the shot. The goal was reviewed to see if Hertl's stick was
above his shoulder, but replays confirmed the good goal call on the ice.
The Sharks converted on their 4th power play of the night early in the
3rd period when Burns snapped a shot from the high slot, splitting Pavelski's
skates as the centerman jumped to avoid catching the shot in his midsection.
Miller seemed to be distracted by Pavelski, never reacting to the shot as it
sailed past his right shoulder.
Patrick Marleau capped the comeback with a pretty tap
in off a long Joonas Donskoi feed at 5:29 of the period. Donskoi flew up the
right wing boards, spotting Marleau cutting away from him in the slot. The
young Finnish forward snapped a pass to the front of the net where Marleau was
positioned for the punch out that split Miller's pads.
The Canucks
were forced to pull Mille with 2 minutes left in regulation, but they couldn't
muster the puck possession to mount any serious chances on Jones. The one
exception was a point blank chance by Daniel Sedin, who had a wide open net to
shoot at. Jones slid to his right to snuff out the prime scoring opportunity.
The two teams will meet for the third time this week on Saturday
night.
Game Notes:
* Goaltender James Reimer was suited
up for his first game as a Sharks since being acquired from Toronto last
weekend.
* Michael Haley made the most of his action after being
called up from the Barracuda. The rookie dropped the gloves with Derek Dorsett
in a spirited bought in the 2nd period.
