Dads inspire Sharks win
SJ snaps 2-game skid with win in the desert
1/13/15 - By Mike Lee -

The Sharks may want to consider flying the players fathers into town this spring if the team happens to make the playoffs. With the dads sitting in the rafters, San Jose turned in a solid 60 minutes and skated out of Gila River Arena in Arizona with a 3-2 win over the Coyotes on Tuesday night. Brenden Dillion scored the go-ahead goal in the 3rd period to help San Jose snap a 2-game losing streak.

A tradition that hasn't happened in a few years, the dads trip serves as a good reminder to the Shark players how they got to the NHL and hopefully what's required to stay in the league. There was no trip last year due to the Winter Olympics, and the NHL's strike abridged season before that meant the fathers hadn't traveled with the team in three seasons.

Perhaps their presence helped the Sharks shake some of the cob webs that cost them points the prior two games.

The Coyotes grabbed a 1-0 lead at 14:19 of the opening period, when Mikkel Boedker snapped a shot from the top of the left circle after cycling from behind the net. Boedker used a screen after taking the pass from Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and side-stepped defenseman Matt Irwin before whipping a wrist shot past Antti Niemi for his 13th goal of the season.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan took a slashing penalty with a minute left in the period, but his teammates evaded any damage before the end of the period. That wouldn't hold up when play resumed in the 2nd period.

It took Joe Pavelski half of the remaining minute to tie the game at 1-1, when the Sharks forward whipped a shot past Devan Dubnyk for his 22nd goal of the season. Pavelski was skating along the right wing boards as Logan Couture wound the puck around the board from the left wing. Joe Thornton tipped the puck as it continued past him to Pavelski, who walked in on net and fired his shot from the right dot. Dubnyk was screened on the play, making is tough for him to see the shot as it tucked inside the far post.

Tomas Hertl put the Sharks on top 63 seconds later, by tipping a Brent Burns blast from the right point. The Sharks wound the puck up the left wing boards before Marc-Edouard Vlasic sent a pass to the far side with a pass along the blueline. Hertl floated from the back of the net into the slot reaching behind him with his stick to redirect Burns shot past Dubnyk.

Arizona re-tied the game with 9 minutes left in the period, when a puck kicked off Logan Couture's skate right to Doan who was parked on the left post. The Coyotes captain easily sent a backhand chance past Niemi for his 10th of the season.

San Jose appeared to score a go-ahead goal later in the 3rd period, but Dubnyk had kicked off the right post, dislodging the net. It was a convenient stroke of good luck for the Coyotes after Matt Nieto clearly scored from the slot. That goal was waved off to keep the game tied.

Brenden Dillon untied it 5:15 into the 3rd period, throwing a puck at the net, which was deflected by Zbynyek Michalek's toe, after the Coyotes defenseman stuck his skate out to try and block it. The goal was Dillon's 1st of the season coming in his 22nd game as a Shark.

Game Notes:

* The two teams combined for 84 hits in the game.

* Tyler Kennedy returned to the lineup after missing the last 14 games with an upper body issue.

* The Sharks placed Mirco Mueller on injured reserve.

* The Sharks return home for a season high 7-game road trip, which will close out the month of January.
