Pavelski leads retribution
SJ beats Edmonton 5-2
12/9/14 - By Mike Lee -

Doing what they should have done 48 hours earlier, the Sharks knocked off the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 at SAP Center. After stumbling to the Oilers in Alberta on Sunday night, the Sharks got their act in gear and whipped up a bushel of goals to bum rush the cellar dwellers from the Great White North. Joe Pavelski scored a pair of goals in the pummeling.

The win was tempered with the fact that several Shark players were injured during the contest, including defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The Sharks defensive struggles don't need another reason to allow opposing teams to target them, but losing Vlasic exposes a team in need of some defensive stability right now.

Mike Brown also left the game after sustaining an injury during the contest. Rookie defenseman Melker Karlsson left the game in the 2nd period, but would return in the final period after receiving treatment from the Sharks training staff.

Pavelski helped the Sharks work past those injuries by scoring the sharks 1st and 4th goals of the game. His first tally came 4:33 into the game, courtesy of a Joe Thornton feed from the right wings boards. Pavleksi received Thornton's pass with his back to the net, before pivoting to his left and lifting the puck over Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens' right shoulder. The shot was accented by the fact that Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry was blanketed all over Pavelski.

A pair of Sharks rookies teamed up to put the Sharks ahead 2-0 less than a minute later. Barclay Goodrow scored his 1st NHL goal by cashing in on a deflection after fellow rookie Melker Karlsson bounced a shot off Scrivens. The most promising part of the sequence was the fact that both youngsters were hovering around the front of the net, where it usually requires a toll when loitering in that region.

The Oilers made a game of it by countering with a pair of goals themselves. Jordan Eberle lifted a shot past Alex Stalock at 12:08 after taking a Leon Draisaitl pass from the left corner, then waiting out Stalock as he cut across the slot.

David Perron tied the game with 3:45 left in the period after Teddy Purcell intercepted a Brenden Dillon clearing pass in the Sharks zone. Purcell swatted Dillon's waist high pass out of the year, then sent a backhand pass to Perron after Dillon and Brent Burns tried to collapse on him. Perron one-timed the feed past Stalock from the left side.

Logan Couture scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal 6:14 into the 2nd period when he deflected a Scott Hannan blast from the left point. Couture used some incredible hand-eye coordination to get his stick blade on the waist-high shot.

Pavelski pushed the Sharks lead to a pair of goals when he finished a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with Thornton and Patrick Marleau during the Sharks lone power play. Steven Pinizzotto was sent off for holding John Scott's stick moments earlier.

Burns added his 8th goal of the year on a blast from the blueline 14:31 into the 3rd period to cap the evening's scoring.

The Sharks finished the evening with 42 hits, an unusually high number for the Sharks. The hit parade was led by Brown who unloaded on 7 Oilers. Andrew Desjardins followed that up with 6 hits of his own.
