Wingels career game leads
Sharks SJ rebounds from last loss
After their spanking in Chicago last Sunday, the
Sharks had plenty of things to correct. Putting the puck past opposing
goaltenders was at the top of the list. They corrected that issue to a degree
on Thursday night, pummeling the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 at the SAP Center.
Tommy Wingels helped the Sharks right their listing offense by scoring a pair
of goals in the Sharks dismantling of the visiting Lighting.
* Wingles
put the Sharks up early in the contest, lifting a wrist shot from the bottom of
the left circle and catching the left post for his 6th goal of the season. He
added his 2nd goal of the game midway through the middle period, benefitting
from a precision pass from Patrick Marleau who sat parked behind the Lightning
net. Wingels kept his stick on the ice, snapping Marleau's feed past Lightning
goaltender Anders Lindback as he slid between two Tampa defenders.
*
Brad Stuart added his 2nd goal of the season with less than 2 minutes left in
the opening period, slapping a shot that caught the inside of the left post.
The Sharks did a good job of getting traffic in front of Lindback.
*
Patrick Marleau missed on a breakaway chance in the final minute of the 1st
period after Victor Hedman was forced to lay the clamps on the Sharks speedy
forward.
* Brent Burns made his return to the Sharks lineup after
missing 13 games with a facial injury. Burns was in the right place at the
right time, deflecting a Scott Hannan shot with his skate. Hannan's shot was
lifted after Joe Thornton's got a stick on it, elevating it enough to hit Burns
in the exact spot necessary to get it past Lindback.
* Marleau
followed up Burns' goal with his 11th tally of the season just 19 seconds
later. Marleau took a feed at the Lightning blueline and raced around
defenseman Mark Barberio on his way to the goal mouth. The speedy center tried
to shoot on Lindback from the top of the crease, but he whiffed, only to gather
the puck and slip a follow up attempt into the Tampa goal for the 5-0 lead.
* Antti Niemi lost his shutout bid with 12:21 left in regulation when
Tyler Johnson capped a nice passing sequence on a rush with a snap-shot from
the slot. Ondrej Palat and Richard Panik setup the goal with a pair of passes
through the slot. The 36 saves he was forced to make was the second highest
save total of the season.
* Tampa Bay continues to struggle without Steven
Stamkos, who broke his leg earlier this season.
* Not that is should
be a surprise, but four Sharks recorded a multi-point night. Patrick Marleau
(1-2=3), Logan Couture (0-3=3), Tommy Wingels (2-0=2), and Justin Braun
(0-2=2). Wingels joked with reporters after the game, playing off the fact that
it was his first 2-goal performance in the NHL. Couture's 3 assists was also a
career high.
* Brad Stuart, Logan Couture, and Justin Braun all had a
+4 game. Martin St Louis, Valtteri Filppula and Teddy Purcell all recorded -3
games for the Lightning.
* San Jose ruled the face off circle winning
37 of 58 draws (64%).
