Sharks knock off pre-season rust
SJ beats Canucks 3-2 on Wingels PP goal
9/16/13 - By Mike Lee -

The Sharks kicked off their pre-season game schedule with a jaunt up north to square off against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night. Led by a gaggle of prospects, San Jose scored three goals, including a power play tally late in the contest to take a 3-2 decision in British Columbia. Joe Pavelski and John McCarthy also scored for the Sharks.

Both Todd McLellan and John Tortorella have a number of decisions to make regarding their rosters, so this was the first chance to see many of their younger players in action for the first time in months. Regulars Pavelski and Wingels were joined by Jason Demers, Andrew Desjardins, James Sheppard, Scott Hannan, and Adam Burish .

Of the prospects that helped their cause on Monday night, Danil Tarasov and Matt Pelech had solid games. Tarasov was one of the better skaters on the ice, pursuing pucks and sticking his nose in uncomfortable places. Pelech was consistent most of the evening, and dropped the gloves with Andrew Alberts, after the Canucks defenseman incited fisticuffs with a hit up high on the Sharks youngster.

Defenseman Dylan Demelo got caught napping on the Canucks first goal of the evening. A 6th round pick for the Sharks in the 2011 NHL Draft, Demelo lost track of Brendan Gaunce as the Canucks carried the puck into the Sharks zone. Gaunce took a Dale Weise feed on the left wing and put a shot past Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock with less than three minutes remaining in the 1st period.

Demelo took a poor hooking penalty early in the 2nd period while both teams were tied 1-1.

Tomas Hertl, the Sharks 1st round pick in 2012, also seemed a tad lost on the ice. The young Czech centerman seemed to be coasting much of the evening. On one sequence in the 3rd period, Hertl took a feed on the left wing as he bore down on the net, but rather than crash the net, he chose to skate around the back of the net and looked to dish the puck ala Joe Thornton.

Hertl missed on a couple scoring chances, including an empty-net chance late in the game, which went fruitless.

In camp on a professional tryout, forward Anthony Stewart tried to make his mark by intimidating the Canucks. His overzealousness cost him a trip to the penalty box in the 1st period. San Jose's penalty kill went a perfect 5-for-5, but Stewart will need to be more selective if he wants to land a roster spot I San Jose.

Stalock 14 saves and was rarely tested, although he surrendered a pair goals to Vancouver. Rookie Hunter Shinkaruk scored the highlight reel goal of the game early in the 3rd period. Shinkaruk carried the puck up the left wing and pivoted before deciding to attack the net and lift a shot over Stalock's right shoulder for a pretty top shelf tally.

B.C. native Brodie Reid received a round applause from the Canucks crowd after his name was announced, following his assist on McCarthy's goal.

The Canucks used the goaltending tandem of Eddie Lack and Joe Cannata. Lack made 25 saves through the first two periods, before surrendering the crease to Cannata, who stopped 14 of 15 shots.
