Post Game Notes: WCQF Game 1
San Jose 3 - Los Angeles 2 (OT)
4/14/11 - By Mike Lee -

» Sharks head coach Todd McLellan had plenty to say after the Sharks win regarding the Jarret Toll hit on Ian White. McLellan pointed out that his team lost a defenseman for a better part of two plus periods and his prognosis is unknown. McLellan was quick to stress that league action against Stoll is out of his hands, so there's nothing the Sharks can do about it now.

» With White going down, the remaining five defenseman were forced to pick up the slack. Dan Boyle: 35:00 of ice time. Marc-Edouard Vlasic: 28:58. Jason Demers: 27:31. Douglas Murray: 27:16. Niclas Wallin: 21:21.

» Boyle was the ironman, logging more ice time than any other player, than any other player. Drew Doughty led the Kings with 30:28 of ice time.

» If the Kings game plan was to come in an out-hit the Sharks, they need to rethink that plan. San Jose laid 43 hits on Kings players, led by Murray and Devin Setoguchi who had 7 hits each.

» Can't remember the last time I saw a fight in a playoff game, but the Clifford - Eager bout was no shabby engagement. Eager led strong with a series of rights. Clifford got around the back of the Sharks forward and landed a couple of shot to the back of Eager's head.

» Goat of the game: Wayne Simmonds. Coughed up the puck in the offensive zone, then failed to get in front of Pavelski's game-winning shot.

» Surprised the Kings were allowed to take so many liberties early in the game. Lots of activity after whistles, which went uncalled until Clowe fnally got fed up and went after Dustin Brown after his hit on Logan Couture.

» Former Sharks Alyn McCauley was in the house. McCauley now serves as a scout for Lo Angeles.

» The Sharks finally won an opening game in the Quarterfinals. Last season they dropped a 2-1 decision to Colorado. The lost 2-0 to Anaheim in 2009 and 3-2 to Calgary in 2008. Their last opening round Game 1 win came against Nashville in 2007 (a 5-4 win in double overtime).

» Couture made his buddy Drew Doughty look absolutely silly on that goal. Doughty may want to ask Kyle McLaren to lend some pointers on hip checks along the side boards.

» Have to give props to Justin Williams for his play tonight. The guy was questionable for a return from his separated shoulder, but in his first game back he scores a goal and adds a helper on Brown's goal.

» No doubt the Kings missed Anze Kopitar's offense tonight. San Jose held the Kings to a single even strength goal with 5 defensemen.

» Talked to the guys that fly the Air Sharks before the game. They mentioned that there are no plans to fly them during the playoffs, but management takes input form fans. So if you want to see them in the inner bowl, let the brass know.

» Antti Niemi's playoff record: 17 wins - 6 losses. The guy only has 95 career regular season starts in the NHL.

» Quote of the Game: "At the start of the game they got exactly what they wanted: an early goal, a lot of momentum and the fans behind them and a lead after the first period," Williams told the Los Angeles Times. "But I thought for the latter part of the second period and the third period we were definitely even if not having the better of the chances. In overtime you never know what can happen. But we're not going to get too low off this."
