Ducks & Sharks play like
it's the regular season Penalty filled pre-season
game entertaining
Pre-season games are typically about as
entertaining as watching grass grow. Friday night's division matchup between
the Sharks and Anaheim Ducks may have dispelled that notion. While San Jose
came up on teh short end of a 5-4 score, the game was about wild as they come.
Think late 80's hockey, where defense was taboo and compassion in the game was
a close second.
Referees Dan OHalloran and Ghislain Hebert
decided to break in their whistles in the opening period, handing out 92
minutes in combined penalties. The Ducks took advantage of a pair of Shark
penalties that were issued 18 seconds apart, scoring on the 5-on-3, and on the
trailing penalty to grab an early two goal lead.
Corey Perry would
convert with the two-man advantage at the 4:15 mark, slipping a shot past
goaltender Antti Niemi, who was making his Sharks debut.
Jake Newton
would get credit for the Ducks second goal 1:14 later, although his shot
appeared to deflect off Josh Green. Niemi was partially screened on the shot,
but it still counted.
The Anaheim San Jose love fest kicked
into mid-season form, with four different fights breaking out within a two
minute span midway through the period. Prospects Brandon Mashinter and Troy
Bodie started things off with a knuckle-buster at the 10:00 minute mark. Jamal
Mayers and Kyle Chipchura would follow that up 21 seconds later.
Jay
Leach and Aaron Voros would cap the under card, before Scott Nichol and
Stephane Villeux capped things with a scrappy tiff.
Perry would take a
double minor for high sticking 2:17 left in the period. The Sharks would cash
in with 16 seconds left in the penalty on a Dany Heatley power play goal.
Heatley bounced a shot off Ducks defenseman Sheldon Brookbank and past Ducks
goaltender Curtis McElhinney.
Joe Pavelski would setup John McCarthy
with a breakaway chance at 8:29 while killing an interference penalty to Jamal
Mayers. McCarthy raced up ice and beat McElhinney high to the stick side.
The Sharks would surrender their 3rd power play goal of the evening
just 56 seconds later. With Mayers still in the box, Pavelski took the Sharks
second delay of game penalty of the game to put the Ducks back on a two-man
advantage. Ryan Getzlaf put a shot on net that Perry for the 3-2 Ducks lead.
The Ducks would pull McElhinney for former Sharks prospect Timo
Pielmeier right after the Perry goal.
Niemi would get the evening off,
being spelled by Harri Sateri.
San Jose took advantage of another Perry penalty early
in the 3rd period, when Sharks prospect Tommy Wingels deposited a rebound past
Pielmeier to tie things up at 3-3.
Perry would convert for the hat
trick minutes later, whipping a shot over Sateris shoulder 4:36 into the
last period.v Torrey Mitchell would make it 4-4 three minutes later, putting
another rebound past Pielmeier after Mayers bounced a shot off the Ducks
netminder.
Jamie McGinn and Voros would square off after the Duck took
exception to a hit by the Sharks forward. McGinn took the decision after
landing a series of haymakers, sending Voros to the lockerroom.
Dan
Sexton deposited a Sharks gaff in front of their own net with 5 minutes to
play. The Sharks mis-handled the puck behind their own net after Jason Blake
applied pressure. Blake got the puck out front, where Sexton pushed it past
Sateri to put the Ducks back on top.
Sna Jose would outshoot the Ducks
44 to 22 in the slugfest.
