Road trip ends with a
thud SJ surrenders 3 PP goals in the
3rd 2/15/09 - By Mike Lee
The Sharks
longest road trip of the season ended no better than it started, as San Jose
dropped a frustrating 6-5 decision to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday
afternoon. The Sharks blew a 3rd period lead, by surrendering 3 power play
goals. The Sharks sent 5 players to the penalty box in the period, taking a mix
of undisciplined and questionable infractions.
Devils head coach Brent
Sutter lobbied the on-ice officials before the final period started, and his
move paid dividends. With the Devils interference first style of play going
unnoticed by referees Kerry Fraser and Chris Ciamaga most of the game, the
Sharks were paraded to the penalty box the entire period.
The Sharks
got off to a familiar start, surrendering a goal to the opposition first.
Douglas Murray provided New Jersey with a little help swatting the puck into
his own goal after Brian Gionta tried winning the puck in the right corner.
Rob Blake tied the game 4 minutes later on a blast from the right
circle. Blake took a feed from Mike Grier, before speeding up the right wing
and uncorking the 30 foot shot. Devils netminder Scott Clemmensen had a clean
look at the shot, but it sailed past him stick side.
The Devils took
advantage of an Alexei Semenov turnover in the Sharks zone at 8:01 of the
period. Brian Rolston took a feed from John Madden to the bottom of the right
circle, then fired a shot that slipped past Evgeni Nabokov on the near side.
Rolston would take a hooking penalty 30 seconds after his goal, and
the Sharks would capitalize. Christian Ehrhoff sent a pass in on net from the
left point, bouncing it off the shin pad of a Devils defender. The puck
deflected right to Patrick Marleau on the right post for the redirect past
Clemmensen.
San Jose would cough the lead up for the third time of the
period when David Clarkson fired a shot from the high slot through a crowd in
front of Nabokov at 12:41. San Jose failed to control the puck in their own
zone, allowing the Devils to create the screen in front of Nabokov.
Nabokov made a spectacular save to keep the Sharks within a goal with 6 minutes
to play in the 2nd period after Semenov was sent off for high sticking Jamie
Langenbruner. Zach Parise put a shot on goal that bounced off Nabokovs
stick. The rebound kicked right back to Parise who slid the puck to his left
with a skate before snapping a shot on goal. Nabokov threw his right pad in
front of Parises shot while laying face down on the ice.
Joe
Pavelski appeared to tie the game at 15:18 of the period when a shot that
deflected off his skate got caught under Clemmensens pad. The
goaltenders momentum carried the pad into the net, but referee Kerry
Fraser lost sight of the puck. Overhead replays were inconclusive, so the
Devils held the lead.
That lead would stand for a minute after
Jonathan Cheechoo ripped a 35-foot shot past Clemmensen from the top of the
right circle. Cheechoo took a feed from Marleau, then steamed up the right wing
before uncorking his shot on the fly.
Colin White and Jamie
Langenbrunner 34 seconds apart gave the Sharks a 5-on-3 late in the period.
Devin Setoguchi and Joe Thornton would team up on the 2-man advantage to give
the Sharks their first lead of the game at 19:47. Thornton would hold the puck
behind the New Jersey until a seam opened up. Setoguchi parked himself in the
slot and waited for the chance to one-time Thornton s feed for San Jose
s 4th goal of the contest.
Sutter would do his thin, pulling
both referees over to the Devils bench before the start of the 3rd.
A Joe Thornton hooking penalty was followed up by a
boarding call to Christian Ehrhoff. Patrick Elias would tie the game after
Parise put two shots on Nabokv from in tight, then finally slid a pass to Elias
in the slot for the put back.
Setoguchi was called for a horrible
hooking penalty 2 minutes later to put the Devils right back on the power play.
New Jersey would convert after Parise put a shot on goal that deflected out
into the high slot. Trailing on the play, Lagenbrunner would punch home the
puck after Marleau quit skating on defense, allowing the Devils captain to
convert untouched.
Derek Joslin committed a huge blunder at 9:51 by
throwing the puck over the glass for yet another Sharks penalty. Instead of
grabbing control of the game, New Jersey turned the puck over at center ice,
where Joe Pavelski grabbed it then raced the puck up ice. The Sharks centerman
put a backhand shot that sailed over Clemmensens left shoulder for the
5-5 tie.
Gionta almost put New Jersey back on top with a shot that
clanked off the left post.
San Jose just couldnt stay out of the
penalty box, and it would cost them. Thornton took a senseless cross checking
penalty at 14:59, and Clarkson would score his 2nd of the game with 3:32 to
play. Rolston fired a shot from the point, that Clarkson deflected enough o
squeeze through Nabokkovs pads. Game Notes
Marleaus
goal gave him 30 goals for the 3rd time in his career. Dan Boyle was scratched
as he fights off the flu. The bug has disabled several members of the team on
the extended roar trip.
