Thornton's OT winner downs
dogs Slow start, big finish for SJ 9/30/08 - By Mike Lee
The Sharks overcame a sluggish
start and overcame a 3rd period deficit to beat the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday
night at HP Pavilion. Joe Thornton scored an overtime goal to help the Sharks
snap a two-game pre-season losing streak. Thornton and Captain Patrick Marleau
would each finish the evening with a goal and two assists to pace the Sharks.
Olli Jokinen was a one man wrecking crew for the Coyotes in the 1st
period. The new Phoenix acquisition assisted on a Alex Bourret goal early in
the contest with a setup pass in front of Evgeni Nabokov.
Jokinen would
take advantage of a misque by Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic who lost an
edge and the puck. The Coyotes would race up ice on an odd-man rush before
Jokinen cranked shot past Nabokov.
The Sharks finally got on the board
2:39 into the 2nd period on a Tomas Plihal goal. Jeremy Roenick created the
chance with a nice pass between a Coyote defender's skates to Plihal in front
of the net. The Sharks farmhand then slipped the puck past Phoenix goaltender
Al Montoya.
Montoya would finish the evening with 31 saves.
San
Jose outshot the Coyotes 15-2 in the period, but only had the lone Plihal goal
to show for it. San Jose would pepper Montoya, but failed to convert even
though they had two power play chances late in the period.
Patrick
Marleau knotted the game at 2-2 early in the 3rd period, on a backhand shot
that lifted past Montoya.
Garth Murray would put the Coyotes back on top
after a wild flurry in front of the Sharks net mid way through the period.
Michael Zigomanis and Derek Morris exchanged shot in tight, before Murray
redirected a deflection past Nabokov.
San Jose would counter a 1:13
later on a Devin Setoguchi tally on a setup from Joe Thornton. Marleau started
the tic-tac-toe exchange in front of Montoya, which ended with Setoguchi's 1st
goal of the pre-season.
A David Hale delay of game penalty would put the Sharks
on the power play seconds after the Setoguchi goal, but San Jose would fail to
convert. San Jose went 0-for-5 on the man advantage.
An Enver Lisin
backhand attempt rang off the crossbar with just over a minute left in
regulation, to preserve the tie.
Thornton would end it in the overtime
period 3:03 in on a shot from the high slot that clanked off the bottom of the
crossbar and into the goal. Marleau setup the goal with a touch pass that
Thornton gathered along the right wing boards, before cutting back to the slot
and ripping the game winner.
