Lots of D scoring in home
preseason debut Sharks unload on Anaheim with 4
goals in the 3rd 9/26/08 - By Mike Lee
From the first day of training camp new Sharks head coach Todd McLellan
has stressed the importance of traffic in front of the net and defensive help
in the offensive zone. In the first glimpse of McLellan's style of hockey on
home ice, the Sharks put on a scoring clinic en route to a 5-2 pasting of the
visiting Anaheim Ducks on Friday night at HP Pavilion.
Three of San
Jose's goals came from defensemen, including their prized off season
acquisition Dan Boyle. San Jose out-shot the Ducks 37-18, but entered the 3rd
period tied 1-1.
Boyle would score 33 seconds into the period to start
a string of four consecutive goals by San Jose. Joe Pavelski gave the Sharks an
early 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a tip play after Matt Kinch put the puck
on net during a San Jose power play.
Anaheim would record only three
shots on goal in that opening period, but Andrew Ebbett's power play would find
the back of the San Jose net with one second remaining in the period.
Jody Shelley and George Parros exchanged pleasantries earlier in the period,
with a fight that would end with both players bloodied.
San Jose would
continue to control the flow of the game in the 2nd period, but Ducks
goaltender Jonas Hiller stopped all 12 shots he faced in the period.
The highlight of the period was a bout between former Princeton defenseman Mike
Moore and Ducks left wing Travis Moen. Both teams seemed eager to show the
other that the regular season series will be a physical one.
Boyle
would finally put the Sharks on top for good to start the 3rd period, and the
flood gates would open. More of McLellan's offensive defense plan of attack
would pay dividends when Moore would record his first goal of the pre-season
five minutes. The goal pushed the Sharks lead to 2-1 and the would never look
back.
Defenseman Alexei Semenov would crank a shot from the
point past Hiller a little more than a minute later to extend San Jose's lead.
Prospect Jamie McGinn would cap the bum rush with a goal at 12:21 to give the
Sharks a comfortable 4 goal lead.
Parros would convert with 3:10
remaining regulation to end the evening's scoring.
As was the case on
Wednesday night, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau did not suit up for San Jose.
Ducks regulars Chris Pronger, Corey Perry, and Rob Neidermayer all saw action
for Anaheim. The Ducks were without the services of defenseman Mathieu
Schneider, who was dealt to Atlanta earlier in the day.
Evgeni Nabokov
would finish the evening with 16 saves in his first appearance of the
pre-season.
