Same 3rd period failure dooms SJ
Sharks lose more ground to Anaheim
2/26/07 - by Mike Lee

Home and away, the Sharks are consistent. Mirroring their loss in Calgary on Saturday night, the Sharks came back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of 2nd period goals, then let the opposition walk away with two points after getting out-scored by their opponent in the 3rd period. The Sharks returned home from their 8-game road trip and wasted another decent effort, losing to division rival Anaheim 3-2 at HP Pavilion.

Once again the Sharks allowed the opposition to jump out to an early lead with 1st period tallies. Anaheim jumped out to an early lead when Dustin Penner tipped a Rick Jackman shot past Evgeni Nabokov.

Penner would score his second of the period after Penner punched in a rebound off the end boards for the 2-0 lead. Francois Beauchemin intentionally sent a shot wide of the goal, serving the rebound up on a silver platter for Penner.

San Jose would snap out of the funk that always seems to follow the home return after a long road trip in the 2nd period. Michalek would go to work by creating chances in front of the Ducks net. The Sharks winger, known more for his speed than grit grabbed a rebound out in front of the Ducks goal off a Matt Carle blast from the point, then backhanded the shot past Duks goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to get the Sharks on the board.

Bryzgalov kept things close with several circus saves, including a nifty glove save off a point blank shot from Jonathan Cheechoo later in the period.

Michalek scored his second of the evening at 17:11 of the period on another play in front of the net. Joe Thornton backed the puck into position along the right wing boards before sending a pass to Michalek in the slot. The Sharks forward tried stuffing the initial shot past Bryzgalov, but the Ducks goaltender would deny him. Michalek regrouped and pulled the rebound across his body before roofing a shot over Bryzgalov.

The energy generated by Michalek's second goal was extinguished 30 seconds later when Curtis Brown was whistled for holding with just over two minutes to play in the period.

San Jose would throw everything they had at Anaheim in the 3rd period, but Bryzgalov denied the Sharks with a steady dose of deflections and a little luck.

Vlasic missed on a golden opportunity early in the 3rd period, after whiffing on a wide open net with Cory Perry in the box for holding Rob Davison. Patrick Marleau would ring a shot off the post seconds later, denying San Jose the go ahead goal after Sean O'Donnell was sent off before Perry's penalty expired.

Anaheim wouldn't record their first shot of the period until the 8:19 mark. Problem is, that shot found it's way to the back of San Jose's net. Teemu Selanne would score on a give-and-go with Chris Kunitz on the ensuing rush to give the Ducks the 3-2 lead. Selanne flipped a pass over to Kunitz before taking the return feed and putting his 38th goal of the season past Nabokov.

Cheechoo would miss on another chance that bounced off the post, deflecting right to Bryzgalov in the crease.

The Sharks would hold the Ducks to two shots in the period, but it was meaningless since they couldn't get any of their 18 shots in the period past Bryzgalov.

Notes:

Defenseman Scott Hannan left midway through the 1st period with a lower body injury. He would not return an dis listed as day-to-day. The Sharks also find themselves looking over their shoulder for the first time this season, with Calgary and Minnesota now only 2 points behind them for the 7th and 8th playoff spots in the West.
