5-on-5 resurgent in win over Dogs
5 different Sharks tally goals
1/18/07 - by Mike Lee

Frederik Sjostrom staked Phoenix to a 1-0 lead at 6:14 of the 1st period on a long shot from the left wing boards. The Coyotes right wing took a cross-ice pass from Kevyn Adams as the two crossed the blueline, then blasted a shot past Sharks goaltender Vesa Toskala.

Rob Davison sparked his teammates by landing two solid shots to Josh Gratton's head when the two squared off 2 minutes after Sjostrom's goal.

The Sharks tied the game at 13:57 when Patrick Marleau tipped a shot by Marc-Edouard Vlassic past Coyotes goaltender Mikael Tellqvist. Tellqvist was in line to stop Vlassic's waist high blast, but Marleau's redirect changed the trajectory, forcing the puck down to the ice.

The Sharks took a 2-1 lead when Milan Michalek swatted home a shot after diving for the puck in the slot. Davison sent the puck into a scrum at the top of the Phoenix crease, before Jonathan Cheechoo bounced a shot off of Tellqvist. The rebound ended up in the slot where Michalek had the position to punch it home.

Phoenix almost knotted things up with a short-handed tally midway through the 2nd period after The Sharks got caught up ice. Doan sent a one-timer on net, but Toskala made a nasty glove save as he slid across the crease.

The Sharks just missed on the counter attack, when Patrick Rissmiller pin-balled a shot off the post from point blank range.

Ryane Clowe made it 3-1 on a redirect from Joe Thornton while parked on the Coyotes doorstep. Thornton made the play by weaving his way across the slot from the left wing boards, before sending a pass diagonally back through the slot to Clowe.

Things got chippy after Doug Murray leveled Mike Zigomanis with a crushing check in the Sharks zone.

Phoenix answered with a Travis Roche goal 5 minutes into the final period on a one timer from the slot side of the right circle. Jeremy Roenick setup Roche with a touch pass through traffic after cycling along the right wing boards. Toskala had a clear look at the shot, but was late with the glove hand.

Matt Carle diffused a Phoenix momentum shift by cranking a shot past Tellqvist to push the Sharks lead back to 2 goals. Mike Grier setup Carle with a pass to the left point, where Carle fired the shot into traffic.

Joe Thornton capped the scoring with an empty net goal after Gretzky pulled Tvellqvist late.
