Officially
whacky No love from zebras this
time 1/10/07 - by Mike Lee
Bewildering. That best
describes the Sharks 3-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night
at HP
Pavilion. Shoddy officiating negated a lively effort by the host Sharks,
who
found themselves starring up at a 3-0 deficit by the midway mark of the
1st
period. Edmonton converted on two of three power plays in that span to
jump out
to the early lead. Even though the Sharks spent a majority of the game in
Edmonton's zone, they failed to draw a penalty until the 17:45 mark of
the 2nd
period.
Marc-Andre Bergeron
scored the game's opening goal just 1:35 into the contest after Jonthan
Cheechoo was sent off for a debatable tripping penalty while the Sharks
were in
the offensive zone. Bergeron uncorked a shot from the point on the
ensuing
power play that slipped past Evgeni Nabokov.
Nabokov would
surrender
Mathieu Roy's first NHL goal at the 10:43 mark on a shot similar to
Bergeron's.
Doug Murray would setup the Oilers final goal by drawing a
phantom
holding call at 11:12. Jarret Stoll would convert 7 seconds into Murray's
penalty with a shot that should have been disallowed after Patrick
Thoresen set
a pick on Mark Bell, which interfered with the Shark forward.
Marcel
Goc would cut the Oilers lead to 3-1 later in the period by chopping at a
puck
that pin-balled in front of Edmonton goaltender Dwayne Roloson for his
4th goal
of the season.
Referee Brad Watson, who had botched the power
play
call on Saturday night which resulted in two Sharks goals on a single
penalty,
seemed destined to atone for his gaff, by preventing the Sharks from
getting
anywhere near a man-up situation.
He would send off Joe Thornton
for
cross checking Stoll after the Oilers forward took liberties with the
Sharks
centerman in the while the Sharks pressed in the Oilers zone.
Things really got whacky when Sharks captain Patrick
Marleau was assessed a double minor for high sticking Raffi Torres to
open the
2nd period. Don Koharksi didn't make the call until after he was summoned
to
the Oilers bench while the Sharks were cycling in the Oilers zone.
Koharski
sees Torres bleeding on the bench, then blows his whistle.
San
Jose would claw back to a one goal deficit
when Jonathan Cheechoo converted at 2:41 of the 3rd period by poking home
a
loose puck from outside the left post on San Jose's second power play
chance of
the evening. Joe Pavelski tried crashing the net from the same angle, but
was
rejected b Roloson. With a pile of bodies in the crease, Cheechoo
followed up
and snapped home his 14th of the season.
The Sharks would force
the issue late in the
game in an attempt to score the equalizer, but tow near misses were as
close as
they would come. Christian Ehrhoff sent a one-timer that bounced off the
left
post with 30 seconds to play, and Marleau missed on an open net chance
from 5
feet out when Roloson made a pad save to deflect the puck over the goal.
