McCauley and Wilson named award
finalists Selke and Jack Adams honors tab
Sharks 4/21/04 - by Mike Lee
The
Sharks received a little recognition for their successes this season, after the
NHL announced that forward Alyn McCauley is a finalist for the Frank J. Selke
Trophy and head coach Ron Wilson a finalist for the Jack Adams Trophy. The
Selke Trophy is awarded to the league's most outstanding defensive forward, and
the Adams Trophy is given to the league's coach of the year.
McCauley
posted single-season career highs in points (47), goals (20) and assists (27).
His plus/minus of +23 was second on the Sharks this season and tied for
second-highest for a single-season in franchise history.
The Frank J.
Selke Trophy is an annual award "given to the forward who best excels in the
defensive aspects of the game." Other finalists for the Selke Trophy include
center Kris Draper of the Detroit Red Wings and center John Madden of the New
Jersey Devils.
The Jack Adams Award is presented by the National
Hockey League Broadcasters' Association to "the NHL coach adjudged to have
contributed the most to his team's success." Other finalists include John
Tortorella of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames.
Wilson and Sutter's nomination become all the more interesting, given
that Wilson replaced Sutter behind the Sharks bench last season. The nomination
is the second for Wilson, who also received consideration for the award in 2000
when he was head coach of the Washington Capitals.
The winners will be
announced Thursday, June 10 during the 2004 NHL Awards Television Special in
Toronto. The show will be broadcast in the United States on ESPN2 from 5:30 - 7
p.m., PT.
