Stars cut Sharks lead to 2
4-0 in Dallas caps horrible weekend
3/7/04 - by Mike Lee

The weekend of horrors came to a crashing end on Sunday afternoon in Dallas, as the Sharks limp home clinging to a two point lead in the Pacific Division after losing 4-0 to the second place Stars. Still feeling the devastating effects of forward Marco Sturm's season ending injury, San Jose had little jump early on and Dallas took advantage. The Stars pounced on the Sharks early and held them in check en route to a 4-0 thrashing.

If Sturm's loss weren't already bad enough, the Sharks almost loss rookie defenseman Tom Preissing to an identical injury late in Sunday's content. Preissing and Stars forward Brendan Morrow were racing to touch up on an icing, when Morrow upended Preissing. The Sharks defenseman injured his knee on the play, setting off a chain reaction response by the Sharks.

San Jose responded with their fists, Mark Smith went after Morrow and earned an instigator call. Rob Davison and Jim Fahey, two other Sharks rookies would lock horns with Bill Guerin and Steve Ott as well.

Dallas took advantage of two 1st period goals to set the tone. Jon Klemm opened the game's scoring just 1:54 into the game with a blast from the point that slipped past a screened Evgeni Nabokov.

Pierre Turgeon would score less than four minutes later after Shayne Corson set him up with a pass in tight.

Rob DiMaio capped a two-on-one rush by tapping a Jere Lehtinen pass past Nabokov midway through the 2nd period.

Corson scored his first goal of the season 14:13 into the final period to ice the scoring and the game.

The two teams will play again one week from Tuesday when the Sharks return to the American Airlines Center for the final time this season. Dallas will also pay a visit to San Jose on March 28th.

San Jose has lost three key starters to injury in the past week. Mike Ricci, Kyle McLaren and Sturm have all been placed on the injured reserve list. Preissing's status was unknown.

Quotables
"I think it's a cheap play to try and put your stick through the guy's feet. I think it's dangerous whenever you're taking guys off-balance in that situation." - Scott Thornton

"I don't think I got him. I think I may have gotten his stick. It looked to me like he just lost an edge." - Brendan Morrow

"Today I think emotions maybe got the better of us. We were a little tentative early ... but once we regrouped after the first period, I thought we played a pretty solid game." - Thornton

Milestones
Center Brad Boyes made his NHL debut, logging 13:03 of ice time on 19 shifts. He was a forgettable -2 with 2 PIMs.
