The table was set for San Jose on Thursday
night. They had an extra day of rest compared to their hosts, the Ottawa
Senators, who played in an emotional reunion game with Brady Tkachuk less than
24 hours earlier. The short turn around and the return to earth following their
adrenaline induced victory was something that certainly put the Senators at a
disadvantage. After grabbing a 4-1 lead, the Sharks had to survive a crazy 3rd
period push by Ottawa. They would prevail 6-2 to win for the 3rd time on their
current 6-game trip.
Tkachuk elected to sign with the Florida Panthers
in the off-season, leaving the Senators high and dry. Ottawa welcomed their
former captain with a rough and tumble 5-1 win. The Senators still had the
juice, but the Sharks took advantage of their opportunities, especially in a
big 3-goal 2nd period.
The win marked the 6th of the season for San
Jose, but only the first in regulation this season.
Tim Stutzle staked
the Senators to the lead 6:16 into the game on a delayed penalty. Skating with
an extra attacker, Ottawa cycled the puck up top before Drake Batherson spotted
Stutzle cutting to the net on the left side. The defenseman sent a long pass
from the right point to Stutzle inside the left circle. Stutzle received the
pass and snapped a 25-foot shot past Yaroslav Askarov for his 7th goal of the
season.
Carter Yakemchuk and the entire building thought he pushed the
Ottawa lead to a pair of goals 3 minutes later with a shot from the right point
that rang off the crossbar and the left post. A video review showed that the
puck never crossed the goal line.
Ottawa rang another shot off the
right post midway through the period to raise the hair on Ryan Warsofsky's
neck.
Nolan Allan is making the most of his limited ice time. He
potted his 2nd goal of the season at 11:04 to help San Jose tie the game.
Jake Sanderson gave the Sharks a scare at 7:48 of the middle period
when he went knee-on-knee with Will Smith. The Sharks forward was no worse for
wear and San Jose went on their 2nd power play of the game as a result.
They would put the mad-advantage to good use when Tyler Toffoli rifled
a shot from the left point that evaded Senators goaltender Samual Ersson at
9:13. Toffoli's shot may have been deflected by defenseman Artem Zub, fooling
Ersson.
Ottawa had a chance to equalize after Darnell was sent off at
11:08. San Jose did more with less when Sam Dickinson moved a puck up ice on
the left side. Collin Graf carried the puck into the Senators zone, dropped it
to Ty Dellandrea behind him and made a bee-line for the right post. Dellandrea
took a stride forward before sending a diagonal pass to Graf who redirected it
while falling to the ice for his 2nd goal of the season.
San Jose made
it 4-1 78 seconds later when Graf flipped the puck to the front of the net from
the left wing boards where Jacob Trouba had pinched. All Trouba had to do was
get a stick blade on the puck, redirecting it past Ersson for his 2nd tally of
the year.
Askarov made what was arguably the save of the young
season with less than 2 minutes left in the period. Drake Batherson had a wide
open net as he collected a pass sitting on the bottom of the left circle.
Batherson shot a shin high shot that Askarov gloved while diving to his left,
outstretching the mitt to collect the would be goal.
On came the
period of horrors for San Jose, where the Sharks had blown numerous leads
through their first 10 games this season.
Jordan Spence finished on a
3-on-1 break 6:24 into the 3rd period. The Sharks were a little too aggressive
in the neutral zone, allowing the Senators to spring up ice with the odd-man
rush.
Things got interesting with just under 4 minutes left in
regulation when Macklin Celebrini took an overzealous tripping penalty in the
offensive zone. The Senators pulled Ersson which allowed former Senator Zack
Ostapchuk to bag a short-handed, empty-net goal to seal the deal.
Ivar
Stenberg added his own emtpy-net goal to cap the game's scoring.
Askarov finished the night with 40 saves.
Game Notes:
* Former Sharks William Eklund met with reporters on Wednesday and
deflected questions about his trade to Ottawa by San Jose last summer. He
responded with the safe "it's a business" response.
* Fabian
Zetterlund, who was also traded mid-season last year, was in the lineup on
Thursday night. He has the primary assist on Jordan Spence's 3rd period goal.
* Igor Chernyshov was injured blocking a shot in the 1st period and
was in obvious discomfort on the bench. He did not return to start the 2nd
period.
* Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky told reporters before the
game that Alexander Wennberg is week-to-week after suffering a lower body
injury in Toronto on Monday.
* Collin Graf's short-handed goal in the
2nd period was the 4th of his career. That is 2nd all-time in Sharks history
behind Kelly Kisio.
