After completing their successful 3-2-0 road
trip and securing 6 of 10 points, the Sharks returned home to take on the
Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Skating for the first time since Will Smith
and Philipp Kurashev were placed on the injured reserve, San Jose leveraged a
pair of Barclay Goodrow goals and a 4-point night from Macklin Celebrini to
beat the Flames 6-3.
Yaroslav Askarov made 27 saves to earn his 12th
victory of the season.
A 2-goal lead had the Sharks things headed in
the right direction, but the Flames quickly countered. San Jose would then use
a strong 3rd period to put the Flames away.
The suddenly resurgent
John Klingberg extended his goal scoring streak to 3 games by potting the
game's first score 1:02 into the game. Macklin Celebrini skated up the right
wing with the puck then sent a 30-foot feed through the high slot to Klingberg
on the off wing. The defenseman then snapped a shot past Gilroy native Dustin
Wolf for his 8th goal of the season.
Barclay Goodrow made it a 2-0
Sharks lead at the 6:00 mark on a set play that the Flames thought should have
been called an icing. Zack Ostapchuk saw Goodrow heading up ice with a head of
steam so he sent it to the Flames end boards from beyond the center line.
Goodrow raced in and grabbed the rebound before putting it past Wolf for his
2nd goal of the season.
Blake Coleman halved the Sharks lead 11:00
into the period with a shot from the right circle that roofed over Yaroslav
Askarov's left shoulder. The goal was Coleman's 10th of the season, which tied
for the team lead with Matt Coronato.
San Jose had a chance to get
Coleman's goal back 3 minutes later when they found themselves on a 3-on-1
chance. Wolf stopped the scoring chance, then the Flames countered quickly.
Ryan Lomberg carried the puck up the right wing, then beat Askarov on the
counter attack to knot the game at 2-2.
It looked as if the two teams
would head to the 1st intermission tied, but Goodrow scored his 2nd goal of the
period on a put back chance with 18.4 seconds remaining in the period. Ty
Dellandrea carried the puck behind the net and tried setting up Celebrini with
a chance outside the left post. Wolf made the stop, but the puck trickled to
the goal line, where Goodrow jammed it home.
A pair of penalties in the middle period ruined the
Sharks flow. Neither penalty hurt the Sharks, but they also didn't allow San
Jose to establish a rhythm.
Askarov was steady Eddie in net, stopping
all 8 shots he saw in the frame. Calgary combined for 17 shots total through 2
periods, which allowed the Sharks goaltender to play a more focused game.
Without having to fight off a flurry of shots, Askarov work load was more
manageable.
Celebrini submitted his nomination for goal of the year
2:46 into the 3rd period to help San Jose to a 2-goal lead. The Sharks phenom
skated into the Calgary zone then pivoted to back skate so that he could
collect a Collin Graf feed. Skating at speed, Celebrini pivoted to his left
with a spin-o-rama before putting a shot that hit Wolf before flipping home for
his 17 of the season.
Tyler Toffoli made it a 5-2 game at 12:53 with
his 10th of the season.
Nazem Kadri scored 38 seconds later after some
contact in front of the Sharks net. San Jose head coach Ryan Warsofsky elected
not to challenge the goal because if he was wrong, the Flames would skate with
their 3rd power play of the night in a 2-goal game.
Celebrini put the
Flames away with an empty net goal at 18:50.
