Sharks season shapes up as a
disappointment

Well, the season is a bit more than halfway over,
with Monday’s pleasant 2-1 win over the Kings snapping a four-game losing
streak. Probably the most obvious thing that can be said about the season so
far, with the Sharks’ record at 12-14-4, is that this is the ideal season
for fans not to be allowed in the building.
We’re not missing
much. (I haven’t been inside the arena for nearly 13 months, myself.)
During this season, which is likely to be the second consecutive campaign that
falls short of making the playoffs, we’ve seen lots of Sharks losses, some
questionable penalties (a faceoff violation?), more blown leads, not much
scoring, and a complete and total inability to beat the Vegas Golden Knights.
Unfortunately, the Sharks salary and contract structure is about
winning now, which obviously is not happening. We’ve got lots of players
tied up for multi-year contracts who are not producing the numbers warranted by
the size of those deals.
So where do we go from here? I suppose some
tweaks can be made on the roster, but so many players (we all know who they
are) are booked for big deals that would likely require the Sharks to package
them with a first-round pick or two if we want to move any of these players.
With the playoffs highly unlikely, Sharks fans have little to look
forward to this season but the draft lottery, seeing where the Sharks pick and
what high-ranked player they will select.
Maybe some of the Sharks players can return to past
glory, like Erik Karlsson. When he’s on his game, he controls the play.
But we haven’t seen enough of that this season. Barring some kind of
massive winning streak and a total collapse by teams ahead of us, we’ll be
just playing out the season from here on out. And next season, hopefully we can
all be back at the rink to watch the games in person, with all the teams (not
just a handful) coming in again.
For now, we can enjoy small victories,
like Monday’s game against the Kings, and hope for at least a few more.
