Sharks Jonesing over goaltending performance
SJ rebounds with 4-0 win over Canucks
9/22/15 - By Mike Lee -

The Sharks bounced back from their lack-luster performance on Monday night with a solid performance across the lineup on Tuesday in Vancouver, to knock off the Canucks 4-0. San Jose received scoring from four different players, including two goal from the defense, and rode goaltender Martin Jones to a commanding victory of the host Canucks.

Unlike last night, the Sharks wasted no time getting on the board. Newly acquired defenseman Paul Martin pumped a one-time chance from the low slot off a John McCarthy feed, put San Jose up 2:41 into the contest. McCarthy picked defenseman Frank Corrado's pocket deep in the Canucks zone before finding Martin cutting in on net.

The Sharks got themselves into a pinch later in the period after Matt Tennyson took a high sticking penalty right after a boarding infraction to Nikolay Goldobin expired. Jones did a nice job to deny several quality shots from the Canucks throughout the 4 minutes of penalty kill. It would be a preview of a solid evening.

Brent Burns made it 2-0 with 2:44 left in the opening period, firing a shot from the left point that wove through traffic en route to the back of the net. Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller likely had the position to stop the shot, but a Vancouver defender clipped it on the way to the goal, redirecting it enough to slip past Miller.

Jake Virtanen gave the Sharks their first power play of the game 5 minutes and change into the 2nd period. A discombobulated attack failed to get any rubber directed at Miller, keeping the Sharks lead at a pair of goals.

Miller made way for Joe Cannata, who replaced the Canucks number one netminder midway through the period.

San Jose finished the period by taking a pair of penalties, to really give the penalty kill a workout. Tennyson committed his second infraction of the game, and Mirco Mueller started a brief scrum after cross checking a Canucks player along the side boards.

In the 3rd period, the Canucks took a pair of penalties that allowed the Sharks to get a little work in on the power play. That work paid big dividends for San Jose. Justin Braun ripped a shot from the point that hit Tomas Hertl in the hip, before redirecting past Cannata.

Alex Burrows was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty three minutes later, which resulted in a goal by Goldobin at 12:37. The Sharks prospect cranked a shot from the high slot, that zipped past Cannata to push the lead to 4-0.

Through an arrangement made prior to the game, the teams played a 5 minute overtime using the new 3-on-3 format. The Sharks held the advantage in the extra session, even though they failed to put a puck past Cannata.

Jones completed the entire 65 minutes to cap the shutout. The netminder capped his solid debut with 30 saves.

Martin, Hertl and Burns finished +2 on the night. Burns and Martin logged 26:31 and 25:16 of ice time respectively.
