Marleau gives Sharks 3-0 series lead
Overtime winner pushes Kings to the brink
4/22/14 - By Mike Lee -

The Sharks haven't had much luck winning in Los Angeles the past two years. San Jose has lost a combined 8 games on Staples Center ice dating back to last season, so it was easy to expect them to lose Game 3 of the Sharks Western Conference Quarter Finals matchup with the Kings. The Kings also had every intention of continuing that streak by jumping out to a pair of leads, only to be rebuffed by a Sharks team that has put itself one win away from the Conference Semi-Finals, after beating the Kings 4-3 in overtime.

* Patrick Marleau was the man of the hour after he knuckled a shot that beat Jonathan Quick 6:20 into overtime, propelling the Sharks to a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. Marleau waved a backhand shot from the bottom of the left circle that Kings defenseman Slava Voynov deflected past Jonathan Quick. The shot was the one and only puck that San Jose put on net in the extra period after battling back to tie the game in the 3rd period. The Kings had controlled the first 6 minutes of the extra period but couldn't capitalize on any of the 5 shots they sent in Antii Niemi's direction.

* After losing 4 times in Los Angeles during the playoffs last season, Marleau's goal seemed even more improbable. The former Sharks captain seemed oblivious to the fact that his shot even got past Quick, who has surrendered 16 goals in 3 games this spring. It looked as if Marleau was alerted to the fact that he had won the game by teammates who began to pile on top of him.

* The Sharks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 3:16 into the game after winger Dwight King was sent off for tripping James Sheppard. Brent Burns scored a fortuitous goal after winding up a shot from the left dot that he appeared to hit with a sand wedge. Much like Marleau's goal, the shot took a slow arching path that fooled Quick en route to the back of the net.

* The Kings tied the game with a power play goal of the own 4:48 into the 2nd period. Jarret Stoll sent a one-time chance from the left side after Tyler Toffoli sent a pass from the right circle. Niemi was late to get across as King's shot tucked inside the left post for his 1st goal of the playoffs.

* Marion Gaborik gave the Kings a lead three minutes later after he waltzed up the left wing and slipped a shot past Niemi. The Kings had a 3-on-2 break and defenseman Scott Hannan appeared to cheat to the middle to take away the pass, but Gaborik elected to shoot instead.

* Rookie forward Matt Nieto scored his 1st career playoff goal to tie the game midway through the period by chopping at a Jason Demers shot from the right point. Nieto sat to the right of the slot, deflecting his shot with his stick. Quick dropped to his knees to make a stop on Demers shot, but Nieto disruption forced the puck to bounce off the ice and hop over Quick.

* A James Sheppard tripping penalty late in the period carried over to the 3rd stanza, but the Sharks failed to kill the penalty. Much like Nieto's goal, Jeff Carter deflected an Anze Kopitar shot from almost the same spot as Nieto.

* Once again the Sharks rallied to knot the game. This time rookie Tomas Hertl used his tenacity in front of the net to force the issue. His first shot from the slot was stoned by Quick, but the young Czech kept jamming at the puck until is slipped past Niemi.

* Justin Braun was hurt late in the 3rd period.

* The Sharks moved to a perfect 5-0 in lifetime overtime wins over the Kings.
