Statistically Speaking
Letting the numbers tell the story
10/28/13 - By Mike Lee -

The Sharks lead in the most important statistic in the NHL, standings points. With 10 wins, a regulation loss (just barely), and a shootout loss, the Sharks have amassed 21 points to lead all NHL teams. At the end of the day, how they perform in the playoffs is really the only thing that matters, but you have to get there. Securing home ice is also a major advantage. Consider that the Sharks have yet to lose in 5 home games this season, and it's easy to see why home ice matters.

There's not much more to expound on when it comes to NHL standings. You're either in the top 8 (playoff qualifiers), or you're not. With that said, let's have some fun and take a look at where the team and individual Sharks sit among the league leaders in a variety of statistics.

Scoring:
The Sharks have 4 players in the top 20 scorers in the league:

(1) Syndney Crosby leads all scorers with 20 points (8G, 12A in 12 games)
(7) Patrick Marleau 14 points (8G, 6A in 12 games)
(10) Logan Couture 14 points (6G, 8A)
(15) Joe Pavelski 13 points (4G, 9A)
(17) Joe Thornton 13 points (1G, 12A)

Goal Scoring:
(1) Alex Ovechkin - 10G
(4) Patrick Marleau - 8G
(4) Tomas Hertl - 8G
(16) Logan Couture - 6G

Assists:
(1) Henrik Sedin - 14A
(2) Joe Thornton - 12A
(9) Joe Pavelski - 9A

(1) Justin Braun - +11
(10) Brent Burns - +9
(13) Logan Couture - +8

Penalty Minutes:
Sorry, no Sharks rank in the top 20 (which is a good thing!). Matt Pelech ranks 24th with 22 PIMs and Andrew Desjardins ranks 28th with 21 PIMs.

Power Play Goals:
(1) Matt Moulson - 5 PPG
(2) Patrick Marleau - 4 PPG
(5) Joe Pavelski - 3 PPG
(16) Logan Couture - 2 PPG

Game Winning Goals:
(1) Three players have 3 game winning goals.
(4) Tommy Wingels - 2 GWG.

That means 6 other Sharks have game winning goals this season (no GWG for shootout wins).

Shots on Goal:
(1) Alex Ovechkin - 75 SOG
(17) Patrick Marleau - 44 SOG

Ice Time:

No Sharks rank in the top 20 for ice time. That means they're spreading the love and that they have the talent to do so. That's an important distinction to make here.

(1) Antti Niemi - 9

Goaltending Goals Against (min 5 appareances):
(1) Josh Harding - 8
(10) Antti Niemi - 17
