Sharks defenseless to stop
Lightning Tampa Bay scores at will in 6-5 OT
disaster
Defensive catastrophe. That about sums up the
Sharks lone visit to Tampa Bay this season. The Sharks put 50 shots on goal and
5 pucks past Lightning goaltender Dwayne Roloson, but they imploded
defensively, allowing 6 goals on 25 shots, losing 6-5 in overtime. San Jose
earned a point, but it was a bitter consolation considering the way they lost.
San Jose blew a 4-3 lead entering the 3rd period, allowing Tampa to
grab the lead with a pair of goals in the first 8 minutes of the period. The
Sharks tied the game on a Tommy Wingels goal with 5:10 to play in regulation,
but a huge defensive gaff cost San Jose with 33 ticks left in the extra period.
Justin Braun had a nightmarish game, contributing a series of mistakes
that contributed to two keys Lightning goals. Braun abandoned his position in
front of the net on the game winner, leaving Martin St Louis unattended. St
Louis sat in front of the Antti Niemi for an eternity, before Victor Hedman
slid a pass from the end boards for the redirect to end the game.
With
the game tied 4-4 in the 3rd period, Braun turned over the puck, then deflected
it into his own goal when St Louis tried sending a feed through the crease.
Even when he was involved in the play, Braun was on the ice for a bad
goal. With San Jose outshooting Tampa Bay 20-4 in the 2nd period, the Lightning
put a puck past a porous Niemi at 14:08. Steve Downie carried the puck up ice
before sending a shot wide of the net. He gathered his own rebound and put the
puck between Niemi's pads en route to the back of the net.
A lack of
big saves by Niemi didn't help San Jose's cause. When his defense was
abandoning him in front of the net, Steven Stamkos was carving him to pieces.
The league's leading goal scorer was left unattended midway through the opening
period. A deflection off a Brendan Mikkelson shot landed on Stamkos' backhand,
for an easy deposit.
Stamkos tied the game early in the 3rd period,
taking a Hedman feed in the slot and ripping am 18-foot shot past Niemi.
Logan Couture, Michael Handzus, Colin White also
scored for San Jose.
Couture appeared to injure himself in the 2nd
period, when he collided with teammate Torrey Mitchell. Both players hobbled
off the ice and needed attention by the team training staff.
San Jose
was already without Douglas Murray, who took a puck to the throat on his 2nd
shift of the game. Murray was taken to a Tampa area hospital as a precaution.
Game Notes:
The Sharks acquired forward Dominic Moore
from the Lightning on Thursday. Moore did not play in the game, but will join
San Jose in Raleigh when the Sharks take on the Hurricanes on Friday night.
Moore was acquired for his apptitude on the penalty kill. The shark
shave wallowed near the bottom of the league in penalty killing efficiency.
San Jose also acquired Tampa Bay's 7th roun draft pick in 2012. Tampa
will receive the 2nd round pick that San Jose received from Minnesota in the
Brent Burns deal.
