Sharks acquire Jody Shelley
Enforcer adds grit to Sharks lineup
1/29/08 - By Mike Lee

The Sharks tried addressing the absence of toughness by acquiring Jody Shelley from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday in exchange for a sixth round draft pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Shelley was public enemy #1 in San Jose several years ago after injuring then Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart with a vicious cross check.

While one of the most talent laden teams in the league, the Sharks lack the toughness factor required in the home stretch run to the playoffs.

"Jody Shelley is an aggressive, physical player who adds a distinct element of toughness to our team," said Wilson. "With the loss of players like Ryane Clowe and Brad Norton due to injury, this is something we have been trying to address and we like the capabilities that Jody brings to our mix of players. He has tremendous character, has always been a team player and has the ability to make the opposition uncomfortable on the ice."

Shelley has been limited to 31 games for Columbus this season, recording no points, but his role as enforcer has landed him in the penalty box for 44 minutes this season.

The Sharks tried acquiring Shelley earlier this season, but Columbus wasn't ready to part with the tough guy.

The 31-year old winger has played in 380 NHL games, and has 29 career points (11 goals, 18 assists) and 1,025 penalty minutes.
