Michalek heats up
SJ snuffs out Flames
10/22/07 - by Mike Lee

Back on the road for another extended trip, the Sharks kicked things off with a dominating 4-1 win over the host Calgary Flames at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Monday night. Milan Michalek scored a pair of goals, including a short handed tally against former Sharks netminder Miikka Kiprusoff. Evgeni Nabokov came within 2:33 of his second consecutive shutout, stopping 18 of 19 shots en route to his 5th win of the season.

Playing in his 1000th game, former Shark Owen Nolan was honored before the game by the Flames in a special pre-game ceremony. The Sharks surprised Nolan by having former teammate Mike Ricci present him with a special magnum of California wine. The Sharks continued the celebration by scoring 4 straight goals to run away with the game.

Ryane Clowe opened the game's scoring with his 3rd of the year as the clock wound down in the opening period. Clowe took a shovel feed from Joe Thornton just outside the right post, before sliding it pas Kiprusoff.

With Kyle McLaren on the shelf with a chest contusion, Alexei Semenov saw his first action of the season, and got to work by dumping rookie forward Eric Godard on his head. The two squared off along the boards in front of the Sharks bench. Semanov launched Godard head over heels on to the Sharks bench to put an end to the bout.

Michalek stung the Flames at 7:16 of the 2nd period after stealing a pass at the blueline on a Flames power play, then racing up the ice and scoring on the short handed attempt. Michalek slipped past Dion Phaneuf, then tried shooting the puck on Kiprusoff from 15 feet. The Flames netminder made the save, but the puck bounced right back to Michalek, who deposited the rebound for the 2-0 Sharks lead.

Steve Bernier would deflect a Craig Rivet blast from the point 10 minutes later while the Sharks were on their own power play. With Rhett Warrener in the box for hooking, Rivet pumped a pass from Matt Carle to the front of the net, where Bernier was parked. Kiprusoff was fully screened on the play, never seeing the shot.

Bernier's goal was enough for Flames head coach Mike Keenan , who yanked Kiprusoff and inserted Curtis McElhinney in net.

McElhinney didn't fare much better, surrendering a goal to Michalek 5:33 into the 3rd period. The Sharks forward was circling around the net, when Jeremy Roenick setup the point blank shot with a pass from the end boards. Michalek one-timed the pass past McElhinney to cap the Sharks scoring.

Godard took exception to the goal barrage and decided to take his frustrations out on Douglas Murray. Godard earned an instigator penalty for engaging Murray from behind.

The only question that remained at that point was if Nabokov would earn the shutout. That plan would go by the wayside after Damon Langkow converted on a give and go with Kristian Huselius at 17:27 of regulation. Sharks defenseman Craig Rivet smashed his stick after allowing the Flames to score, one of few mistakes the Sharks made all night.

Game Notes:

The Sharks will spend the next two days in the Banff National Forest, on a team retreat. They will get a chance to do a little team bonding before heading to Detroit for a rematch of last Thursdays loss at HP Pavilion.
