Sharks announce team
awards Marleau named team MVP 4/4/04 - by Mike Lee
Before Sunday's game against
the Los Angeles Kings, the Sharks announced several team honors, including team
MVP and Rookie of the year. Captain Patrick Marleau was awarded the 2003-04
Seagate Technology Sharks Player of the Year. Local media voted Marleau the
team MVP after leading the Sharks with 56 points (28 goals, 28 assists).
Marleau's playedin his 500th NHL game on Nov. 26 versus the Chicago Blackhawks,
and posted a career-high nine-game point streak (4 gals, 6 assists) from
November 6th through the 26th. He also recorded his 300th career point on
January 10th at HP Pavilion in a game against the Atlanta Thrashers.

Marleau was selected to play in his first NHL All Star
Game back in February and finished the season by posting his fifth consecutive
20+ goal campaign.
Marleau was also awarded the new Playstation Three
Stars of the Game Award, given to the Sharks player who amasses the most number
of "3 Star" points.
At the end of each 2003-04 regular season game,
players received five points for being chosen first star, three points for
second star and one point for third star as listed on the official NHL game
sheet distributed by the game's official scorekeepers. Each star is chosen by
members of the media based on the player's performance each game.
Defenseman Tom Preissing was named the Sharks Rookie of the Year for his play
this season. Preissing finished the season fourth in scoring among Shark
defenseman with 2 goals and 17 assists.
Preissing was signed by San
Jose as a free agent on April 4, 2003. After playing four seasons (1999-200) at
Colorado College, where he led the nation in scoring among defensemen with 52
points (23 goals, 29 assists) in 42 games during the 2002-03 season. He was
also named one of ten finalists for he Hobey Baker Award, selected to the JOFA
Division I All-America First Team and Hockey Digest's First All-America Team.
