Preds pound Sharks
Nashville converts on 5 of 7 power plays
2/18/04 - by Mike Lee

After posting one of the most impressive wins of the year in Philadelphia, the Sharks followed up with their worst defensive showing of the season in Nashville on Wednesday night. The host Predators thumped the Sharks 7-3 in a game that resembled a clinic on how to convert on the power play. The Predators scored five goals on the power play. Newly acquired forward Steve Sullivan made his Nashville debut with a hat trick and an assist in the rout.

Things looked as if they were headed in the Sharks favor early on. Patrick Marleau scored his 25th goal of the season on a partial wraparound four minutes into the game.

Sullivan would bag two power play goals later in the period, but the Sharks tied things up when Nils Ekman scored on a shorthanded chance after Wayne Primeau broke up ice and slid a pass across the slot to Ekman on the right side.

Greg Johnson would score an unassisted goal 24 seconds into the 2nd period, then Kimo Timonen added a second straight tally for Nashville five minutes later.

Sullivan would convert for the third time on the power play with just under three minutes to play in the period.

San Jose would only make matters worse by stacking up slashing penalties at the end of the period. Their problems would carry over into the 3rd period, but starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was spared further embarrassment after Sharks head coach Ron Wilson pulled him in favor of Vesa Toskala.. Scott Walker would score a 5-on-3 goal 22 seconds into the final period, then Kyle McLaren would draw a trip to the box less than a minute later, setting up yet another 5-on-3 opportunity for the Predators.

Timonen would strike again while McLaren and Tom Preissing sat in the penalty box.

Scott Thornton would convert on a centering pass from Mike Ricci at 6:16 of the period.

Rookie defenseman Marek Zidlicky finished the evening with five assists.
