Sharks take Game 3 with OT winner

If the plot lines of the Sharks playoff series with the Los Angeles Kings weren't already intriguing enough, Game 3 threw in a few more twists and turns to spice things up. Fresh off the travesty that was the officiating blunder in Los Angeles on Thursday night, the officiating played a major role in the outcome of Saturday night's contest, which marked the first game at HP Pavilion in the series. This time it was the Sharks who had the luxury of a two-man advantage to end the game.

There are losses, and there are losses that you'll remember for the rest of your life. Game 2 of the Sharks Western Conference Semi-Finals will go down as one of the latter, after the San Jose surrendered two goals to the Los Angeles Kings in the last two minutes of regulation in a crushing 4-3 defeat. The Sharks outplayed the Kings most of the evening, but fell victim to fate as the Kings took advantage of the charity of referees Tom Kowal and Brad Watson in the games waning moments.

The Sharks kicked off their Western Conference Semi-Final series with the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night with a resounding thud. After starting the game like a bat out of hell, San Jose fizzled over the last 40 minutes of play and succumbed 2-0 to a Los Angeles Kings team that took advantage of opportunities and muzzled the Sharks in the best-of-seven series. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick made 35 saves for his 2nd shutout of the playoffs.

Prove It!

The Vancouver Canucks are down 0-3 in this series against the San Jose Sharks, after letting game two slip away with less than a minute left. Last time the Sharks were in a position to sweep a series, in 2011, it took seven games. Now is a fine time to prove This Season Will Be Different.

Win first two games on the road. Check. Don't let down and take Game 3 at home. Check. Put the Canucks away in Game 4 and get some rest. Not so fast. Two seasons ago, the Sharks had the Detroit Red Wings on the ropes, up 3-0. They took their foot off the gas and ended up stretching the series to a 7th game that may have cost them in the next round. San Jose had to play three elimination games in that series, expending valuable energy that would have been better spent against the Canucks in the Western Conference Finals that season.

Torres stakes SJ to 2-0 series lead

Winning one of two games on the road to open a playoff series is considered successful in the NHL. Winning both games is essentially putting a stranglehold on your opponent. San Jose returns home on Friday night with a foot firmly pressed on the throats of the Vancouver Canucks after taking Game 2 of their Western Conference Quarter Final series with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win at Rogers Arena in British Columbia. Former Canuck forward Raffi Torres scored one of the biggest goals of his career 5:31 into overtime to propel the Sharks to a 2-0 series lead.
