For
the Week of 11/26/01
Jason Weimer - Florida
Panthers Wiemer was suspended by the NHL for seven games last week for
high-sticking Toronto's Darcy Tucker resulting in a concussion. Tucker is
expected to be out for at least a week because of a Grade 3 concussion, Maple
Leafs head coach Pat Quinn said.
Wiemer hit Tucker with the butt-end of
his stick, and was given an elbowing major and game misconduct during the Maple
Leafs' 5-1 victory over the Panthers last week. Video replays show Wiemer
skating up on Tucker from behind then jabbing at the Leafs player with his
stick. The concussion was most likely compounded when Tucker fell and slammed
his head on the ice.
NHL angel of death Colin Campbell spoke with
Wiemer after watching a replay of the hit, and then presented his ruling.
"While it is not clear from a review of the videotape of the incident
whether the injury sustained by Tucker was caused by the action of Wiemer or by
other factors, it is clear that Wiemer's actions were deliberate and
dangerous," Campbell said.
