Lockout Coverage Begins Here The publishers of the
Hockey Alliance bring you news and commentary on the NHL lockout and the
impending cancellation of the 2004-05 NHL Season.
The Neo-Optimist
By Toby Ivey - OutsidetheGarden.com I am a born again
optimist...a neo-optimist if you will. I am confident for the first time in
months, that there will indeed be an NHL season AND a corresponding CBA in
place in a matter of days. Okay so you might think I cracked under the weight
of the prospect that the season will finally be cancelled next week, and that
there is no basis whatsoever for my optimism. Perhaps you're right, but after
some careful consideration I think I might be on to something and I would like
to share my reason why here in this column. More >>
End
It By Matt Witting - WashingtonHockey.com The Super Bowl
is over. March Madness is peeking over the horizon. The NBA is ready for the
All-Star break. The NHL is dithering. Some say that the really wealthy owners
are holding up the process. Some say that a collection of cheapskate owners
(suddenly Ted Leonsis appears in the cheap list) is responsible. Others think
that Gary Bettman and Bob Goodenow are individually responsible. Still more
blame the players. Regardless, there's no hockey at the rink. More >>
I Had a Dream that
there was Hockey going on! By Melvin Tate -
Blackhawkzone.com I recently had a dream that the Hawks were actually
playing hockey last month, but then I woke up back to reality and sure enough,
they weren't. The question now is when?? More >>
Is a New CBA Near?
By Chris Thompson - WildOnIce.com The NHL Lockout is over
four months old now. With the exception of a couple fruitless meetings, there
has been virtually zero effort from either side to reach an agreement and get a
season in. Both sides have ignored fans calls to put their differences
aside and get a deal worked out. As a result, this game we love so much but
which was already on thin ice in terms of its fan base, is now in danger of
falling through the ice and drowning itself. More >>
You Heard It Here
First By Tony Cogin - Blackhawkzone.com I call these
epiphanies "enlightening bolts." One of them hit me on the drive to the train
station this morning. The situation with the owners, players, and now agents
gets more and more inexplicable every time a new fact emerges. What is the link
between these various and divergent pieces of information that could possibly
make it all make sense? Then BLAM! I got it. Singed my eyebrows a bit, but now
it all makes sense. More >>
What is
Hockey? By Naughtwirth Reeding - Blackhawkzone.com The NHL
is currently facing a number of obstacles. Attendance is down, TV contract
dollars are drying up, local coverage is suffering, and public apathy is
gaining strength as a lockout now threatens to become the longest in the
history of pro sports. So the league is considering numerous rule changes in an
effort to become a more exciting and fan-friendly entertainment choice once
play resumes. But that may cause problems. More >>
A Counter
Proposal by Toby Ivey - OutsidetheGarden.com What is there
really to talk about with the NHL season on hold, the sides not talking and no
real resolution in sight? Well a potential resolution I guess, and that is what
TSN with their myriad of resources and experienced commentators have presented
this evening. Basically they avoid a cap by simply putting a maximum salary on
veteran players (i.e. those not on an entry-level contract) and a few tweaks
here and there. I'm sorry, but I must admit I'm disappointed...how about you?

Goodnight
Hockey By Bill McNally - BlueJacketsCentral.com By the
time you read this, the lights will have been turned out on the National Hockey
League. Its playersespecially its star playerswill shortly begin to
activate their respective back-up plans. Some will play in Russia; many will
play in Europe. The Swiss will be one of the luckier recipients of North
American hockey talent. Who knows, by this time next year names like Rick Nash,
Geoff Sanderson, Tyler Wright, or even Jody Shelley will be plastered on the
buses in Interlaken. More >>
